A bolt that’s too light can stress your crossbow like a dry fire. Here are 3 crossbow bolts worth a look, from a 445-grain TenPoint to a budget 12-pack, plus the length, weight and nock checks to do before you buy.

TL;DRKey takeaways
  • Match your manual first: the right length, minimum weight and nock matter more than the brand on the box.
  • The TenPoint EVO-X CenterPunch is the best overall pick, with straightness listed to .001″ and packs weight-matched within 1 grain.
  • The Carbon Express PileDriver suits heavier hunting setups at about 442 grains in the 20″ length.
  • Reegox bolts are a budget way to practice, as long as their length and nock fit your crossbow.
  • Inspect every bolt before you shoot, because a cracked carbon shaft can fail at the shot.

Two bolts came in the box. One is bent, the other is somewhere past the target. 🙃

Before you reorder, know this: a bolt lighter than your manual’s minimum loads your limbs like a dry fire. So match length, weight and nock first, then pick by purpose. Below are three picks, from a precision TenPoint to a budget practice pack, and hunters should check the best bolt weight for hunting too.

Why crossbow bolts matter for accuracy, safety and your limbs

A crossbow bolt is crossbow talk for an arrow, and it carries all the energy your limbs store. Its weight, straightness and nock decide where it lands and how hard your crossbow works. Modern bolts are mostly carbon shafts with an insert and point up front, vanes at the back and a nock built for your string.

Afflictor, a broadhead maker whose video is further down this post, has a good way to think about it:

A crossbow is nothing more than a single shot rifle that shoots an arrow. That’s all it is. This is a precision piece of equipment.

Afflictor BroadheadsChoosing a crossbow bolt · 0:50 ↗ (opens the video on YouTube at this moment)

And like any rifle, it’s only as accurate as what you feed it. A fast crossbow with mismatched, wobbly bolts can group worse than a slow one with a matched set.

Parts of a crossbow bolt: the nock, three short vanes, the carbon shaft, the insert and the field point, named on one bolt.

A good bolt is also part of the safety system (not just ammo). Too light, and there isn’t enough mass to absorb the energy, so the limbs and string take the shock the way they do in a dry fire. So that’s why crossbow makers print a minimum bolt weight in the manual and why bolts belong in a proper quiver or a hard case between sessions.

  • Straightness: a straighter shaft flies more consistently from shot to shot.
  • Weight: it must meet your crossbow’s minimum and match from bolt to bolt.
  • Nock: the nock style has to suit your string and trigger.
  • Length: use the length your manufacturer lists, whether you shoot a reverse draw, compound or recurve crossbow.

I learned how serious a dry fire is with my recurve, not a crossbow: I released the string at the range with no arrow on it. Everyone around me reacted, and that’s how I found out it can break a bow.

I actually did a dry fire and the whole range was like whoa.

The TenPoint EVO-X Non-Lighted CenterPunch is a 20″ carbon bolt that TenPoint inspects for straightness to within .001″. Packs are weight-matched within 1 grain, which is what keeps one bolt from landing apart from the rest.

  • High-modulus carbon shaft with a Lazer-Tech carbon weave
  • Straightness inspected to .001″
  • Weight-matched packs, about 445 grains listed
  • Alpha-Nock HP with a deep string groove and Bohning X vanes

Pros

  • The tightest straightness spec on this list
  • Weight-matched packs for consistent groups
  • Heavy enough for the minimums most makers list

Cons

  • The Alpha-Nock doesn’t suit every crossbow
  • Costs more than most bolts
  • Buyers report fletching colors that differ from the photos

Who it’s for

It’s for hunters and target shooters whose crossbow takes the Alpha-Nock, usually a TenPoint. If consistency is your priority, start here. Listed front-of-center balance runs from 15.5% to 17.5% depending on the pack and the seller, which you can check yourself with my FOC guide.

2. Best for heavy hunting: Carbon Express PileDriver Crossbolt

Key features

  • Heavy carbon bolts: about 442 gr at 20″, 479 gr at 22″
  • More weight means more momentum, but more drop at long range
  • Pick the pack with your crossbow’s nock style, moon or flat
  • Straight to ±.004″, with factory-fitted 4″ vanes

Carbon Express lists the 20″ PileDriver at 442 grains with a 100-grain point, and the 22″ version at 479 grains. That extra mass means more momentum, which is why hunters pair it with fixed or mechanical broadheads for deer.

Afflictor’s hunter lands firmly on the heavy side of the speed-or-weight argument:

I’m a proponent of momentum. Momentum makes all the difference, and I like a heavier bolt because it does cause less stress on your limbs as opposed to a lighter bolt… I would say that it is much better to sacrifice speed than it is to sacrifice penetration.

Afflictor BroadheadsChoosing a crossbow bolt · 7:24 ↗ (opens the video on YouTube at this moment)

I’m with him for hunting. A few fps won’t cost you a deer; a bolt that stops short can. Just don’t go so heavy that the bolt drops off your aiming points, and stay inside your manual’s range.

  • 0.348″ carbon shaft
  • Factory-fletched 4″ vanes
  • Straightness held to ±.004″
  • Sold in 20″ and 22″ lengths

Pros

  • Heavy build for hunting momentum
  • Two lengths to match more crossbows
  • Packs come with different nock styles

Cons

  • Looser straightness spec than the TenPoint
  • You must pick the pack with the right nock
  • Heavier bolts drop more at longer distances

Who it’s for

It suits a deer hunter whose crossbow takes a 20″ or 22″ bolt with a moon or flat nock. Zero your scope with the same weight you’ll hunt with, because a heavier bolt hits lower than a light one at the same distance.

3. Best budget: Reegox Crossbow Bolts

Reegox sells carbon bolt’s in 12-packs in 16″, 18″ and 20″ lengths, with 125-grain target points included. The listing gives 425 grains for the 20″ bolt and a ±5-grain weight tolerance, which is looser than the two picks above.

  • 12 bolts per pack
  • 16″, 18″ or 20″ shafts
  • 125-grain target points included
  • Moon nocks and 4″ plastic vanes

Pros

  • A big pack for practice sessions
  • Three lengths for different crossbows
  • Points included, so you can shoot right away

Cons

  • Specs come from a marketplace listing, not a maker spec sheet
  • Looser weight matching than premium bolts
  • Not the bolt to trust with broadheads on a hunt

Who it’s for

It’s for a new crossbow owner who wants to practice a lot without worrying about every lost bolt. Check the length and weight against your manual before the first shot. Then put them to work on a good crossbow target.

How to choose crossbow bolts: length, weight, nock and straightness

Every crossbow manual lists the bolt it was designed around. Start with that page, and only then compare brands.

  1. Length: bolts are commonly sold from 16″ to 22″. Use the exact length your manufacturer lists, because a bolt that’s too short or too long can sit badly on the rail.
  2. Weight: meet the minimum finished weight, point included. Heavier bolts carry more momentum; lighter ones fly flatter.
  3. Nock: half-moon, flat and capture nocks (like TenPoint’s Alpha-Nock) are not interchangeable. The wrong one can let the string slip under the bolt and dry-fire the crossbow.
  4. Straightness: listed as a tolerance such as .001″ or .004″. Smaller is straighter.
  5. Purpose: practice with the same bolt and point weight you’ll hunt with, so your scope stays zeroed.
Three end styles: half-moon, flat and capture. They are not interchangeable: use the one your manual names.

Here’s what a few makers publish as minimum finished bolt weight. Your own manual is the number that counts. Read more in my guide to the best bolt weight for hunting.

CrossbowPublished minimum bolt weight
TenPoint and Wicked Ridge, 2012 and newer370 grains, point included
TenPoint and Wicked Ridge, before 2012420 grains, point included
Wicked Ridge Ranger, Lady Ranger, Ranger X2350 grains, point included
Bear X crossbows370 grains (Bear X also requires TrueX nocks on its narrow models)

Crossbow bolt care: inspect, rotate and replace

Carbon is strong, but a hit on a hard object can crack it in a way you can’t always see. Check every bolt before it goes on the rail.

  • Flex test: hold both ends and bend gently while listening for cracking.
  • Nock check: replace any nock that’s chipped, loose or cracked.
  • Insert and point: make sure the point is screwed in tight and the insert hasn’t pushed in.
  • Vanes: re-glue or replace torn vanes before they change the flight.

The same video explains why the numbering trick works:

You want everything to be consistent, because consistency is the key to proper flight time after time out of your crossbow. If you’re getting an errant flight out of one bolt, generally there is something wrong with that one bolt.

So when one bolt keeps wandering, blame the bolt before you blame your shooting. Spin it, check the nock and vanes, and if you can’t find the fault, set it aside.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to the questions readers ask most.

How often should I replace my crossbow bolts?

Replace a bolt the moment it fails a flex test or shows a crack, splinter or bend. There’s no fixed shot count; condition decides.

Can I use any broadhead with my crossbow bolts?

Only if the thread fits and the finished weight still meets your manual’s minimum. Match the broadhead weight to the field points you practice with.

What length crossbow bolt do I need?

Use the length in your crossbow’s manual, often 20″ or 22″ on modern hunting crossbows. Don’t guess from the rail length.

Are hunting bolts different from target bolts?

Often they’re the same shaft; the difference is the point. Hunters screw on a broadhead of the same weight as their practice field point so the impact point doesn’t change.

Can I shoot regular arrows from a crossbow?

No. Vertical-bow arrows are longer and use nocks that aren’t made for a crossbow string and trigger, so use bolts your manufacturer approves.

Final thoughts

The best crossbow bolt is the one your crossbow was built for, shot consistently. Match length, weight and nock first, then pick the TenPoint for consistency, the PileDriver for heavy hunting or the Reegox for cheap practice.

Before your next session, check every bolt and log your groups. My free range log makes that part easy.
